When grocery shopping for healthy items trying to determine "good" vs. "bad" food can be confusing. A tip would be to try using this simple rule of thumb:
If your food can't go bad, then it is NOT good for you!
Foods that can sit on a shelf or in the fridge for weeks (or longer) at a time are generally packed with preservatives. Many preservatives contain harmful chemicals or high amounts of sugars in order to increase the shelf span. This not only decreases the quality of that food product, it also introduces unwanted chemicals into your diet that your body would be better without.
If your food can go bad, then it IS good for you!
Whole foods (such as fruits, vegetables, eggs etc) often expire quickly. These foods expire more quickly because they are recognized by all levels of the food chain (even bacteria and mold) as a source of vitality. They are full of essential nutrients that better meet your body's needs!
The next time you are grocery shopping, try sticking to this rule of thumb. In general, the healthier foods tend to be located in the perimeter of the grocery store like the fresh produce, meats, and dairy product. Try avoiding the middle aisles of the store as much as possible, which usually contain more boxes and other packaged products that are more likely to use preservatives.
